Taste Translation: Annual Japan Sake Awards 2024

In a move that will be welcomed by anyone trying to figure out whether you mean Asashi Shuzō in Yamaguchi or Asashi Shuzō in Niigata (makers of Kubota), the Yamaguchi one is changing its name to Dassai to make it the same as their brand.

The soon-to-be Dassai KK also announced that they expect sales to increase five-fold from JPY 20 billion to JPY 100 billion in future, with a target of JPY 30 million in sales domestically and JPY 70 million overseas.

That reminds me of my first ever brewery visit (which I was talking to my other half about after I decided to figure out how many I’ve visited – as in going into the brewing area – 65!). The taxi driver at the rural Yamagata station said he had never heard of the company but recognised the brand straight away 🤣
